Lionel Polar Express Train Set Reviews

My first Polar Express Train Set. I would agree with the other reviews I've seen, except I'm not sure it is really "heirloom" quality. It is "made in China" quality. I barely touched the decorative steam whistle on the top of the engine, and it nearly broke off. The headlight, and the smoke features are pretty cool. I can't seem to find the "switch" to turn off the smoke though. Other reviewers warned that the smoke unit would burn out if not turned off or run with smoke fluid.
Had been looking for a train to put under our family Christmas tree. A couple of years ago I came across the Polar Express Train Set version when scoping the net for trains. Set was getting good reviews as seen on other sites. Amazon had the best price and no shipping cost... has been a great choice. The train set was a snap to put together. Great memories of the train under the tree in the 60's... but with NONE of the maintence problems of old time train and the track alignment problems!! Engine whistles and puffs smokes. Has been a hit with family and friends. Box the train came in is very well made and easy to repack for storage and protected from damage for next year. And of course as in movie, comes with the famous Gold Bell that rings when a child believes... to put on your own tree.

Extended Amazon Reviews:
the set was easy to put together , and is sturdy. looks great, and the grandchildren loved it. esp. the smoke and whistle. wonderful toy, that will last them years. our grandchildren are 4 years old, and we bought the wooden version for them to play with and this one to keep til they are older.
With the slightest touch, the track falls out of place. Spend the extra money, and purchase the "O" gauge train set by Lionel. It is a much better product, and your kids will have enjoy it much more than its plastic "G" gauge" counterpart.
This is a solid first-quality Polar Express Train Set that would be well worth the asking price even if it wasn't affiliated with a popular book and movie. In fact, the locomotive is a scaled-down model of a real locomotive, a Berkshire that was used by the Pere Marquette railroad that ran near the author's home when he was growing up. It is a lucky coincidence that the locomotive the author painted in the book is one that Lionel has been modeling since the 1950s, and all they had to do is change the "paint job" to create this fine model. In case you wondered, this is the best steam locomotive Polar Express Train Set that Lionel includes in any of its train sets. The passenger cars are also based on the same class of real-world cars that the author painted for the book.
